Yesterday, finally Debian Sarge (3.1r0) was released. After three year of intensive development by lots of volunteers this – in my opinion the best – Linux taste has been set out of the (frozen) ‘testing’ range. Were it was put into, I thought August 2004. When everybody was thinking it shouldn’t take longer then two months :)…

Today, I finally had some spare time, the GPS project (see 6th of May) had to be delivered today. Almost everything was finished, minus some small points. Also most of all other school tasks were finished. So, in two weeks I finally have my – well-deserved – holidays :D. After finishing the GPS project, I had to fix something for the Henri Bloem site, doing some things in the garden, and now, time to test ‘Sarge’.

I already had a Woody box at home, which was running a 2.6 kernel though. So, I thought, just upgrade to Sarge as stated in the release notes. Everything went well, upgrade took about half an hour (at a PII 400MHz machine, not bad). Then it was time to reboot, checked everything again, and there we go…

When the machine was about to start LILO mr. Murphy appeared. Only ‘LI’ was located, fuck, I think I had to run lilo before rebooting. Now, I still have to reinstall everything. Not bad, because the system was running Woody for about 2 and a half years by now, and really stressed with lots of unstable software, haha.

Have fun watching the end of 24‘s season 4, again a increment of pleasure in comparison with season 3 :D.

Not quite an active log, huh. Time to change, I’m not going to tell you what I’ve done and what I didn’t, just anything I _would_ like to talk about. It was just annoying to tell everything I’ve done this week, so there wasn’t a motivation to log. Well, now there is.

This week I’m having a week of vacation. Well, vacation, let’s say, not going to school. Because I had to do lots of things for school this week. We’re working on a GPS program (on PDA and desktop) to make it possible to set out walkings with a GPS device. Quite interesting project, but it takes lots of time. We’re still running on schedule, I hope in a few weeks I can show the final results.

At work everything is also fine. We’ve introduced – after months of testing – finally our virus- and spamscanning – mail exchangers. Our mail system is now much more reliable to outages of one particulair server. I’ve ASCII-arted an impression of the current situation:

	MX1	= mx1.mail.tiscomhosting.nl
	MX2	= mx2.mail.tiscomhosting.nl
	POP01	= pop01.mail.tiscomhosting.nl

	 /----------------\				/----------------\
========\|      MX1       |				|     POP01      |/==========
inet in	|| virus and |========\ /=======| POP archiver || inet out
========/|  spam scanner  |        |            |	|		 |\==========
	 `----------------'        |            |	`----------------'
				   \[ internal ]/
				   /[ network  ]\
	 /----------------\	   |		|	/----------------\
========\|      MX2       |	   |		|	|     POPxx      |/==========
inet in	|| virus and |========/ \=======| POP archiver || inet out
========/|  spam scanner  |				|		 |\==========
	 `----------------'				`----------------'

As you can see, mail only comes in via the two MX servers. They scan all e-mail on SPAM and virusses. Virus e-mail is immediately deleted, SPAM e-mail otherwise is being tagged with an striking subject name. After that it is forwarded through the internal network to the POP-servers, they store all e-mail for clients and give them out on request. The internal forwarding is done by SMTP and the POP-servers only allow SMTP-traffic from the internal network.

Well, if one of the MX servers is down, there’s no problem, the other one will still receive incoming e-mail. If one of the POP-servers fails, the mail is still being queued at the MX’s. They will deliver everything when the POP-server is comming back up. The only remaining problem, when a POP-server is down, clients are unable to download their e-mail, that shouldn’t be a big problem because the POP-server didn’t have a higher downtime than a half an hour last year. Nice solution we still think.

Tomorrow again a football match.

First day of Easter, finally some time to log :). Didn’t do anything much useful thursday, as going to school and train my keeper skills at football. Nice note, won on eBay a bidding on a JBL 5.1 speaker set. Which fits perfectly on my – also bought at eBay – second hand receiver, the Harman/Kardon AVR 500 RDS.

We (the seller and I) made an appointment to pick up the speaker set friday evening. He lives in Utrecht, but as can be read below I’ve got my driving license a week ago :).

Before driving to Utrecht I still haven’t done anything advantageous than just surf around the internet and do some standard maintenance for work. Did also call my nephew who also lives in Utrecht to meet him at his place, that was allright. So there I did go, my first real cartrip, to Utrecht. Everything went ok and the car wasn’t total loss :). However, I did receive a parking fine of a freakin’ €47,-, just not normal, because I left the car for about 10 minutes and we were shipping speakers in and out. Visiting my nephew was nice, he’s going to Cuba at thursday for three weeks, have fun Bart!

After installing the whole speakerset at friday night I finished everything saturday morning, and wow, what a fantastic sound. Truely incredible, better then at the cinema ;).

Saturday afternoon it was time to play football, started at the bank and stayed there the whole match, lost with 0-3. It was 0-0 until 10 minutes before the end. A match like: ‘who scores wins, and if both teams doesn’t score, it’s just a draw’, unfortunately we didn’t score… Small good thing, have to sit on the bank with our first team monday :).

Today, sunday, the first day of Easter I visited together with mom, dad and Teun grandmom and dad. Whole family was there and played small matches of football, had a lot of fun.

Not much to do next week, tomorrow sitting on the bank as said. Tuesday still to school, we have to finish some organizing project. Wednesday another day off, the Dutch national team has to play then against Armenia (they’ve won with 0-2 against Romania by the way :D), also a win game, at first sight :). Haven’t planned much after that, thursday just a normal day school, just like friday. The week after next week: exams. And again, we’ll see when the next log has arrived.

Ok, I admit, I’m not that kind of active logger :). Let’s talk about the important match last sunday. PSV just overflowed Ajax. ‘My’ club scored four times, and nevertheless, they didn’t play in Eindhoven itself. Wonderful match, Van Bommel scored three times, now let’s hope the Dutch coach of the national team (Marco van Basten) has also seen it, and that Van Bommel can start in the match against Romania this weekend.

After that important match I decided to go see the local football club. They had to play against FC De Rakt, in a town called Uden. Driven to the place with my brother, but we couldn’t find the football field, pretty embarrassing, because it was one of the first times I’ve driven with anyone else :).

Monday just a normal day school. Monday evening it was time to play my once-in-two-weeks ‘futsal’ (indoor football), just with some friends. Nice match. After the football we went to visit my friend Roel, he became nineteen, the little ‘sjambek’ :). Didn’t stay very long, had to get up at 6:30 next morning.

Yesterday also a usual day school, after school made a few things for our group project (making a GPS plotter, I’ll tell something about the project soon :)), and also my standard football training. Was quite ok, had to train with the first team, just like my normal teammates.

Today no school, but lots of work to do, either for my work at Tiscom Hosting as for the group project work at school. Have finished almost everything I had in mind doing today. Well, tomorrow one day school, then free at friday (Good Friday), monday (Easter), probably tuesday and wednesday, and after next week the exams start. So hopefully I find some time to continue logging :).
